Helpful Information (Budgeting)

When budgeting for a part-time employee, it’s important to remember that the cost of the position is not just the hourly rate of pay. You must also account for the Mandatory Employer Related Costs (MERCs), which are additional costs employers are legally required to pay on top of wages. You need to budget for both the rate of pay plus MERCs.

Currently, MERCs add approximately 14.5% to the rate of pay (this percentage is reviewed annually and subject to change)*. This includes:

  • Vacation Pay (starts at 4%)
  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
  • Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)
  • Health Tax (HTAX)

👉 Example: If a part-time employee earns $25.00/hour, the actual budgeted cost is approximately $28.63/hr ($25 + 14.5%)

*Additional costs would need to be considered for a position with group benefits. For example, a full-time employee with group benefits would cost the rate of pay + MERCs and additional employer paid group benefits (such as medical/dental/vision coverage, pension and group life insurance).
