Mathematics
Mathematics seeks hidden patterns that help us to understand life and the complex problems that surround us. This discipline of numbers, quantity, and space can be applied to many fields and industries, from Life Science to Finance.
As a student in our Department of Mathematics, you will develop advanced analytical and critical thinking skills in addition to:
- Research techniques
- Scholarly writing proficiency
- Comprehensive understanding of mathematical structures
- Mathematical proof formulation and solution skills
Mathematics is a very diverse and intellectually stimulating field of study. In addition to our traditional Mathematics programs, we offer Mathematical Physics and the flexibility to combine your Mathematics degree with a degree in Education, Economics, or Physics. You will benefit from our small class sizes, world-class faculty, unique research opportunities, and the ability to pursue mathematical topics you find most appealing.
Our graduates have gone on to pursue rewarding careers in both government and the private sector in research, leadership, and applied capacities.
Lakehead Advantage
Our Mathematics Major has both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science option, depending on your area of interest and application. You can also choose to study Mathematical Physics, or combine your Mathematics degree of choice with a degree in Education, Economics, or Physics. This flexibility allows you to focus your education on particular topics starting in first year and graduate as an expert in the field.
Our small class and lab sizes facilitate one-on-one time with educators. Our Department's intimate and interactive learning environment helps to refine your skills and abilities, allows you to explore new and emerging topics, and exposes you to unique research opportunities. You will get to know our faculty on a first-name basis and have access to them as mentors, educators, and practicing mathematicians.
The Lakehead University Math Assistance Centre (LUMAC) provides free tutoring services for students enrolled in math courses, particularly first and second year courses. If you need clarification at any point, our LUMAC undergraduate tutors, graduate students, and faculty are available on a drop-in or online basis (via Skype) to help with homework and prepare you for success in any mathematics course.
We offer Statistical Consulting Services for graduate and senior undergraduate students, researchers, and faculty to help with:
- Survey and experiment design
- Programming and computing
- Analyzing data
- Interpreting and presenting results
If you are completing an Honours Thesis, this great resource allows you to take advantage of the wide range of expertise and lived experience available.
Transfer Options
It’s easy to transfer to Lakehead. Our pathway and general transfer policies are designed to help you maximize your credits from your current or previous studies at either college or university – or even both.
There are a number of ways to transfer to Lakehead. Let us help you achieve your degree completion goals. For more information regarding specific admission requirements from college or university, check out the “Admissions Requirement” tab above and select your most recent level of study.
Applying to Lakehead University is easy and we are here to help you along the way.

As a first year Mathematics major you will complete the following courses:
- Mathematics 1171 & 1172 – Calculus I & II
- Mathematics 1271 – Discrete Mathematics
- Mathematics 1272 – Logic, Set Theory, and Proofs
- English 1015 – Introduction to Academic Writing
You are also required to take an English course or a different course from the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, with Department approval. Your additional required courses will be dependant on whether you have chosen to pursue the Arts or Science streams. For Mathematical Physics requirements, visit our Academic Calendar.
Our faculty members are active researchers in their area of study, including geometric functional analysis, statistics, and probability theory, and they often hire undergraduate research assistants. These positions are paid and can last up to sixteen weeks during the summer, providing an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience. For current opportunities, we recommend you speak to your professors in your area(s) of interest.
Our Department of Mathematics holds colloquiums (seminars/talks) throughout the year on various topics related to course content and independent research. Attending these colloquiums is a great way to expand your knowledge and network with leaders in broad mathematical fields.
The Lakehead University Mathematics Club is a student-run organization dedicated to advancing and increasing awareness for the Department of Mathematics. The Math Club holds regular fundraising events, organizes math contests and end-of-year dinners, and celebrates the annual Pi Day (which includes pies!). We encourage you to get involved with this great organization and contribute to our great community of math lovers.
Our Department regularly oversees, and volunteers to help with, elementary and secondary school math contests, such as the Kangaroo Math Contest. Participating in such contests is a great way to bolster your resume, particularly if you are pursuing the Concurrent Education option.
